How To Organize A Small Linen Closet

How To Organize A Small Linen Closet

Hi friends, I hope you’re having an amazing day. Have ya’ll ever heard the saying ” If you do something for 21 days it becomes a habit”? Well I’m starting to believe it’s true lol. Recently, I’ve become obsessed with organizing. Room by room , space by space I’ve been tackling them all.  All except for my linen closet. It has such a narrow space. It’s literally no wider than my dyson vacuum. Each day for the last year I’d walk pass it and just put that project on the back burner. Well today I woke up and said no more! It was time to assess the situation, gather my supplies and GET IT DONE! The only issue was my linen closet had narrow 7 inch shelves and sat at the top of an even more narrow hallway. These two factors made it incredibly diffuculy to film but just like with this project in general ,I knew I had to figure it out. Below I’ve listed my top 5 tips for decluttering and organizing a narrow linen closet.

  1. REMOVE EVERYTHING- I started out by removing all linen and household items. They were placed on my bed so I could easily see the shelves and what needed to be sorted. This is the time to carefully measure your shelves so you can go out and confidently shop for the proper organizing supplies. I’m more of a play it by ear kind of girl so I opted to skip this part and just scoll the Sams’s Club aisles  until items I like found me lol.
  2. INVENTORY & SORTING-Ok, i’ll be honest this is probably going to be the longest step in the process. But trust me it’s definetly worth it in the end. I placed all of the closets items in a donate, trash or keep pile. Click  here

to see all of the hidden tresures that were found. When going through this process be mindful to donate things you no longer need or bring you happiness. Sometimes letting go of things can be diffucult so be sure to leave room to give yourself some grace. My ultimate goal was to get rid of any unnecessary linen so  loads of items were on the donation pile.

3. USE SPACE/VACUUM BAGS-  These bags are great for storing away unused or seasonal items. They come in a variety of sizes and styles. My personal favorites use a vacuum to remove extra air. But we also have the kind that just zip close and you have to manually roll the air out.

4. STORAGE SOLUTIONS- I purchased 2 woven baskets and a lazy susan to store the linens that were going back into the closet. The towels were rolled and stacked to conserve much needed space. Instead of folding my sheets, they got stored inside a pillow case. I folded the top, fitted sheets and one pillow case on top of each other then slid them in the remaing pillow case. Once folded they were placed in a bin with a fabric sheet between them for added freshness. I folded my face clothes and stacked them along with extra toilet tissue in the 2nd basket. The tissue we would use first was placed in a lazy susan.

5. DECOR/ LIGHTING- I’m the only girl in my home so the linen closet had to be extra cute. I mean if I’m going to spend hours of my life folding towels and restocking paper products, I needed to be able to do it with a smile. Adding decor and lights helped me to accomplish this goal. The top shelf was styled with family photos and pink faux flowers. We also included 2 small jars to house miscellaneous items such as tylenol and q-tips. Lastly I installed some renter friendly led lights. They changed colors and came with a remote. Now when the linen closet was open it had pink lights. I was in heaven! Depending on your families needs , this step may not be necessary but it’s certainly worth the extra effort.

So there you have it!  My 5 tips for decluttering and organizing a small linen closet. Although I used them for a linen closet, you can carry these tips over to use in any organizing project. If you tackle a space in your home be sure to tag me on instagram. I love seeing what ya’ll come up with! Remember, If I CAN do it, You CAN do it!

Until next time, Happy Organizing!
